How many First Aiders should I have?

This table is a guide only and should form part of your risk assessment process.  Consider this table for each site and each shift that you work.

Level of Risk	Number of employees at the site	Suggested number of first aiders
Lower Risk:	Fewer than 50	At least one appointed person
	50 – 100	At least one first aider trained in FAW or EFAW
	Over 100	One additional first aider trained in FAW for every 100 employees or part thereof
Medium Risk:	Fewer than 20	At least one appointed person
	20 – 100	At least one first aider trained in FAW or EFAW for every 50 employees or part thereof
	Over 100	One additional first aider trained in EFAW for every 100 employees
Higher Risk:	Fewer than 5	At least one appointed person
	5 – 50	At least one first aider trained in FAW or EFAW
	Over 50	One additional first aider trained in FAW for every 50 employees

EFAW training enables a first-aider to give emergency first aid to someone who is injured or becomes ill while at work. FAW training includes EFAW and also equips the first-aider to apply first aid to a range of specific injuries and illness.
